Remember, there is the word Interim at the front of my title--Interim Director of Children & Youth Ministries. There’s some freight that goes with that, and in case you don’t know what that is, I’d best tell you. For starters, it means that I am only here among you for a little while—about 19 months left now. It means I do something besides just manage your religious education program. It means I do some things and go some places here you might not expect to find a religious educator to be involved in at all. I am a Change Agent. Why an Interim? Simple. Churches find the success rate of new leadership without an interim period very low, and with an interim period, very high. I am not here just to run your Religious Education Program until you find someone else. I bring a much bigger portfolio to this Special Place. Here is what I must do for you before I leave:
While I go about this, you will find that I listen a lot—to what is said and to what is not said. You will find that I ask a lot of probing questions—you may find these by-turns upsetting, exciting, annoying, enlightening, or provocative. You will find that I spend most of my Interim work, not on the RE program, but on the church. Ask me why that is sometime. It’s a fragile, fun, and sustaining space, this Interim period. “What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?” Let’s find out together. See you in church.
