The Bread Hymn | Lyrics, Jim Connelly
— Tune of “Amazing Grace” Oh, let us learn to be like bread, To have that common touch To give ourselves that others live, and hunger not so much. Oh, may we be like well-made bread, Like bread that’s made just so, Be kneaded, formed and fortified, and given room to grow. And may our crust be not so thick that we our goodness hide; Let those who seek their needs from us find tenderness inside. For those in need whose lives are pained by hunger, hurt or strife, Oh, help us, God to be their bread, to be their staff of life. |
When I came to serve congregations in the East, I naturally asked about how "you do your bread service." I got blank stares--I ignorantly thought that all UU congregations did Bread Service--just like InGathering or Flower Communion--because that's what we all did in the Midwest. So, I am delighted to share this most Unitarian service with you--it has always been my favorite Unitarian worship service. ― Steven Mead, Religious Educator.
